  1. Bill Warren

While the popular imagination may think of a diary as not the most exciting read, for anyone who wants to get a genuine feel what life was like for a working cowboy in the very early 1900’s, Bill Tanner’s diary is a gem. He starts writing it in 1903 while working on the XIT Ranch, and finishes shortly after his marriage to Ada Skaggs in 1911. He marvels being able to travel from Texas to Chicago by train 3 times in one month, experiences homesickness living in his dugout home in Oklahoma, and tracks the weather from blazing hot to being caught on the prairie by sudden icy northers. A gentleman throughout, he is the real McCoy.
